Evaluate Trees for Logging
One of the things that an arborist working for a logging company can do is to look at potential logging locations. At those sites, the arborist will decide if there are enough trees that are ready to be harvested, what trees can be harvested, and how many trees should be harvested. The goal is to sustainably harvest the trees so that there are going to be more trees in the future to harvest. After the area has been logged, an arborist will go back into the area and supervise the replanting of trees to help create that sustainability. In this case, the arborist may be an in-house employee of the logging company, or they may be someone that the logging company hires as a contractor.
Maintain Urban Trees
Another thing that an arborist can do is to work with a local government to take care of their urban trees. Many cities will plant trees along roads and sidewalks to help beautify the city. Those trees need to have someone who can take care of them and keep them healthy. That starts from choosing trees that are going to thrive in an urban setting all the way to deciding if a tree needs to be removed because it is sick or failing to thrive. An arborist who works for a local government like this may have their own department. Still, they may also be part of the parks department or the urban works department because both of those departments would work with the infrastructure of the city and may be the people who carry out a lot of the orders that the arborist puts into place when it comes to urban trees.
On the face of it, it sounds like an arborist has a simple job. They take care of trees. But, in reality, there is a lot more to taking care of trees than it sounds like there may be.
